Tourism in Sète and the surrounding area

The maritime town has a traditionally global outlook and has become both an essential tourist destination in Languedoc-Roussillon (Occitania) and the beating heart of a business boom. This explosive cocktail gives the town the unique lively, invigorating feel which is so popular with all our visitors. You can actually feel the ambiance from the top of the hotel's panoramic terrace which takes in both the soothing Mediterranean horizon and the colourful bustle of the town’s centre and canals.

A natural setting
Mediterranean authenticity

Sète offers an amazingly well-preserved natural environment, with 12 km (7.5 miles) of golden sandy beach, the Étang de Thau, the famous Natura 2000 listed “Corniche de Sète”, a state-owned 20-hectare pine forest full of footpaths offering extraordinary views out over the Mediterranean, and much more.

A fishing town...
and a town full of guinguettes

The Étang de Thau is famous for its oysters – which, although they’re said to be “from Bouzigues”, are actually farmed in all of the neighbouring communes. This speciality can be enjoyed either raw, cooked, or in marinière sauce in one of the “guinguettes” (small restaurants with music) scattered both all over the town and along the waterfront. While you’re there, you can also try a few other typical Sète recipes, such as the famous “tielles”, cuttlefish in rouille sauce, not to mention all the many different kinds of fish soup…

The Canal du Midi

The Canal du Midi flows into the Étang de Thau so, for a day’s exploration, a cruise or a meal, check out all the charms of a walk along the waterside! And for cyclists, a dedicated route follows the canal.

Culture & heritage

Culture & heritage
There’s always something going on in the town - there are traditional festivals (Les Joutes de la Saint-Louis), music festivals (Jazz in Sète, Musicàsète, Sunsète Festival, etc.) along with all the many museums and exhibitions you can explore (the Contemporary Art Centre, Museum of the Sea, Brassens Space, etc.), so culture addicts will always have something to satisfy their cravings!

Local produce

Sète is a town offering all kinds of good things to eat. At the covered market in the town centre you can try some of the wonderful local produce whilst soaking up the typical Mediterranean ambiance (markets are held every Wednesday). All of the towns on the Thau archipelago also have charming little markets, based around early fruit and vegetables or craftsmanship (Balaruc-les-Bains, Montbazin, Mèze, etc.)

joutes

 The jousting tradition

These traditional clashes date back to the 17th century and used to be held to celebrate the founding of the port of Sète. Later on there were jousts between the married men and bachelors from each part of the town, although they have always been an excuse for a party, with plenty of music and good cheer.
